HOW TO CHOOSE DOWN COMFORTERS

Comforters

The Basics

The ‘Legend’ to the right outlines how to compare down comforters. In the center is the weight, [Ww] Winter Weight, of the down comforter. [Classic, Light Weight, Year Around, Winter Weight]. Fill Power is in the upper left corner [600, 700, 800]. Along the right hand side is a ‘recommended’ range of temperatures that weight down comforter will be most comfortable [80 degrees - 64 degrees]. And in the lower left hand corner is the design of the down comforter [Baffle or Sewn Thru].

First, what is the temperature of your bedroom while you sleep? Match that temperature with a comforter listed below. It's that easy.

OUR Sleep Temp™ DOWN COMFORTERS

Do you sleep outside?

It remains a mystery to us why other companies market their down comforters based on where you live. They explain that if you live in a cool northern climate you need a warmer down comforter and if you live in a warmer southern climate you need a light weight down comforter. Given that modern technology has the ability to control the temperature of the air and moisture inside your house, including your bedroom, we designed the Sleep Temp™ down comforter system around the temperature of the sleeping environment and not the temperature outside.

Depending on where you live the temperature at night can be 15 - 20 degrees cooler than the temperature during the day. So which temperature are you supposed to use to determine which down comforter weight would be best for you? The night time temperature of course. Well would that be the night time temperature in the summer or in the winter? In sharp contrast to the outside temperature fluctuation the temperature inside your house fluctuates maybe 4 degrees over the course of the year. In the summer time you may set the temperature at 70 or maybe 68 degrees. While in the winter time you may adjust that up to 72 degrees. Each down comforter has a Sleep Temp™ range that is graphically represented along the right side for each down comforter listed above. Our down comforters are designed around the "Sleep Temperature" of your bedroom while you sleep and NOT the temperature outside.

Design & Construction

Sewn Thru Design:

There used to be a time, maybe 12 - 15 years ago, when all down comforters where made using a single thread sewn thru box stitch design. They would use a single thread to sew together the top sheet and bottom sheet of a down comforter shell into the classic boxes that basically define the way down comforters look today. Unfortunately, to save money and time during the manufacturing process they would also continue to use that same single thread to bind the ege of the down comforter as well. The edge of down comforter is the weakest part and needs special attention or it will wear out and slowly allow the down to escape.

A Sewn thru design down comforter tend to sleep a little cooler than a baffle box design down comforter. The sewn thru design of the the box stitch prevents down from reaching the point of intersection of the top and bottom pieces of fabric. Once you put the down comforter in the duvet cover the cooler spots at the points of intersection of the fabric become less apparent. Sewn thru is not a inferior design as long as the shell is made using quality materials. Extra stitching for strength and durability with Hungarian goose down stuffed into those long staple Egyptian cotton box stitch squares and you a have a heirloom quality down comforter which if taken care of properly will provide decades of quality rest. Duvet covers are critical to any down comforters longevity regardless of where you buy it from.

Baffle Box design:

Many manufacturers would tell you this is the most difficult and expensive design for a down comforter shell. Imagine a pizza box made of Egyptian cotton and filled with Hungarian goose down stitched together into a square or rectangle depending on the dimension. The side walls, which are interior walls in the middle of the comforter, are vertical and usually 1” to 2” inches tall. The outer shell of the top and bottom attach to these vertical interior walls creating a 3 dimensional square or baffle similar in shape to that of a box. Hence the name baffle box design. This design is superior in many ways to a sewn thru design in that the down is given the freedom to reach it’s maximum loft without being compressed by the stitching of a sewn thru design. Additionally the baffle box design prevents the ‘cool spots’ normally associated with a sewn thru design because the out shells never touch and are filled with down. When you add Long staple Egyptian cotton and additional stitching like the double stitching found on all of our down comforters and the elegant sating piping around the perimeter you end up with a very luxurious down comforter shell. They are expensive to make and expensive for someone to fill. Now add Hungarian goose down, considered the finest most luxurious down available, and fill those baffle box shells with it and you end up with the finest luxury down bedding in the world.

Stitching And Piping:

All of our down comforters, including the Classic, are edged with two rows of stitching to bind the down comforter around the perimeter ensuring that the most vulnerable part of the comforter is protected. Double stitching is more expensive and time consuming and is a sign of excellent quality and superior design. A double stitch around the perimeter is much stronger than the ‘old’ world’ single stitch design and will significantly increase the longevity of your down comforter. In addition to the double stitching we also use a satin piping to finish of the edge that is both functional and elegant which is why we double stitch the perimeter. This gives all of our down bedding a more elegant look while adding strength to the soft Egytian cotton. This added strength also adds longevity. To finish and bind the double stitching we use satin piping allowing us to add our unique duvet hooks on each corner and between the corners, 8 duvet hooks in all, to attach to your duvet cover. Duvet hooks help prevent you down comforter from sliding or moving during the night within your duvet cover.

Hotel Collection Bedding:

Hotels around the world want to create a sleeping environment second to none for their guests. They want them to be comfortable and well rested so when they travel again they will return to their hotel. The challenge for the hotel is a monstrous one. Their guests not only come in different shapes and sizes but have very different needs for getting a night of quality rest. Hotels only have one type of bed in one firmness for every room and that bed has to work for every guest that stays in their hotel. The bed sheets have to ‘survive’ being washed every single day and the down comforter has to be just the right temperature every night for every guest regardless of the temperature they adjust thermostat.

So what do they do? Thin duvet covers for layers and layers. Room service for bringing additional blankets or additional down comforters and those down comforters are usually pretty light because they have to be. Light so that if you are cold you can call room service for either another down comforter or for additional blankets if the down comforter isn’t warm enough. A daunting task to say the least and a task that has inspired our hotel collection including our luxury down bedding hotel collection.
